Big Lakes County employs the services of a full-time Fire Chief to manage fire protection services and coordinate emergency response for the County.
Under the direction of the Fire Chief are five (5) volunteer fire departments in the hamlets of Enilda, Grouard, Joussard, Faust, and Kinuso. Big Lakes County Fire Services also partners with neighbouring jurisdictions to provide fire protection services.

HAMLET OF ENILDA
The Hamlet of Enilda has a volunteer fire department with 16 active volunteers. The Enilda Volunteer Fire Department, under the guidance of Deputy Fire Chief Donald Bissell, provides fire protection service for the hamlet and rural residents of the County.
HAMLET OF GROUARD
The Grouard Volunteer Fire Department has 22 volunteer firefighters. Under the guidance of Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Auger, the team provides fire protection services to the residents of Grouard, Kapawe'no First Nation and surrounding area.
HAMLET OF JOUSSARD
The hamlet of Joussard has a volunteer fire department with 12 volunteers. Under the guidance of the Deputy Fire Chiefs, Allan Koski and Angela Paul, the Joussard Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection services for the hamlet of Joussard and surrounding area.
JOUSSARD MUNICIPAL SERVICES FACILITY
In 2003 the Joussard Fire Hall underwent major renovations and construction. The Joussard Fire Hall is now known as the Joussard Municipal Services Facility and houses the following:

REGIONAL FIRE TRAINING CENTER
The Joussard Municipal Services Facility is the regional fire training center for all County Fire Departments and any other events as deemed by the County.
COUNTY FIRE TANKER
The County has allotted a truck bay for our 1600 IMG tanker which, when requested, will respond to emergency response requests anywhere in Big Lakes County to provide water support to fire ground operations.
BREATHING AIR COMPRESSOR/CASCADE SYSTEM
The County has also installed a breathing air compressor and a cascade system to provide breathing air for all County fire departments.
BACKUP EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER
The County main Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is located at the main County Administration Office Building on the west end of the Town of High Prairie. In the event that this EOC cannot be utilized due to an evacuation of the area or power failure, the County has installed a 50 KW generator at the Joussard Municipal Services Facility. This facility can operate 100% with backup power and is the backup EOC for the County.
HAMLET OF FAUST
The hamlet of Faust is located at the midway point between the Town of Slave Lake and the Town of High Prairie along the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake. The community has a volunteer fire department with 15 volunteers. Under the guidance of Deputy Fire Chief Robert Nygaard the team provides fire protection services to the hamlet of Faust and surrounding area.
The Faust Municipal Services Facility houses both the local fire department and the County Family and Community Services (FCS).
HAMLET OF KINUSO
The Kinuso fire department is comprised of a team of 14 volunteers. Under the guidance of the Deputy Fire Chief Everett Samuelson, the team provides fire protection services to Kinuso and surrounding areas, as well as relief support to the Swan River First Nation and the Town of Swan Hills.
Through an Inter-municipal Agreement, Big Lakes County provides the Town of High Prairie Volunteer Fire Department with an equipped fire truck and tanker through funding to respond to fire emergencies within the County. The County also has a Wet Side water tanker (1700 Gal) to support the High Prairie Rural Volunteer Fire Department when responding to fire emergencies within the County. The High Prairie Volunteer Fire Department is under the direction of Fire Chief Ken Melnyk and provides fire protection services to the Town of High Prairie and surrounding rural areas in the County.
