2010 Municipal Elections


Municipal Elections are held every three years on the third Monday of October.The Municipal District of Big Lakes is divided into nine electoral divisions. Each division has a Councillor that has been elected by citizens within his or her divisional boundaries. Each Council member serves a three-year term. The elected Council then elects a Reeve and a Deputy Reeve from within, on an annual basis.

Election Day is Monday, October 18th.

Advance Voting will be held on Thursday, October 7th between the hours of 10 am - 4 pm at the MD of Big Lakes Council Chambers.

Candidate Eligibility
A person considering nomination must meet the following criteria:

  • is at least 18 years old;
  • is a Canadian Citizen;
  • has resided in Alberta for the six consecutive months immediately preceding election day;
  • is a resident of the MD of Big Lakes and the ward for the six consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day;
  • and is not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.

Nomination Day is Monday, September 20th between the hours of 10:00 am - 12:00 Noon at the MD of Big Lakes office in High Prairie

Voter Eligibility
 A person is eligible to vote in an election if they meet all the following criteria:

  • is at least 18 years old;
  • is a Canadian Citizen;
  • has resided in Alberta for the six consecutive months immediately preceding election day and the person’s place of residence is located in the area on election day.
